The June issue of Critical Muslim featured We Have the Flying Wings, a short story by Paranda writer Fatema K.
Set in the mountainous village of Sapid Tapa, the story follows 13-year-old Shirin. She stands up to the Taliban’s demands for grain and livestock tributes, and leads the village into battle.
The story is inspired by the true events of Chehel Dokhtaraan. In 1893, in the Urzugan mountains of Afghanistan, forty-seven Hazara girls resisted Amir Abduir Rahman Khan (1844–1901) and his army of thousands, ultimately sacrificing their lives.
