Talking about the piece, Marie says, “When I wrote this piece, one question was on my mind. Am I able to echo the voice of Afghanistan’s girls and women and even men to the world? Does my story have this power? Then I remembered: Yes. Stories have power. When I read To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee I was able to understand racial injustice from another corner of the world. Maybe this could happen in other contexts as well. As a writer I feel obligated to share the stories of my land. I believe this is not the time to sit in silence and do nothing. It doesn’t matter what position we find ourselves in, it is always the right thing to speak out against injustice and discrimination.”
